OpenAI is looking to cash in on its massive free-user base by 2026. Apparently, they’re eyeing to pull in around $1 billion from this “free user monetisation” in 2026, and by 2029, that could skyrocket to nearly $25 billion! Combined with their overall revenue targets, that is pretty wild!
We’re talking about a projected total of $125 billion!
It’s a turnaround, though. Just not too long ago, CEO Sam Altman was pretty vocal about how much he dislikes ads, even saying in a podcast, “I kind of hate ads.” Plus, their CFO, Sarah Friar, mentioned they weren’t planning on diving into advertising anytime soon.
But with ChatGPT’s user base hitting around 600 million a month, it’s not shocking that advertisers are looking to get in on that action. The real question is how introducing ads will shake up the user experience.
Will it be annoying, or just a small price to pay for keeping the service free?
Only time will tell how this will affect how we engage with the platform!
