Google’s been rolling out these AI Overviews that give you quick answers right at the top of your search results.
The good news for Google?
More people are visiting their search pages.
The not-so-great news?
People aren’t sticking around as long or engaging as much with what they find.
It’s like this: when you get a quick answer right away, why would you bother clicking through to an actual website?
It’s super convenient for us as users (who doesn’t love a shortcut?), but it’s kind of a nightmare for websites and publishers who need those clicks to make money.
Google seems to know this is a problem and has started adding links within the AI summaries to try and send people to the original content.
But honestly, who knows if that’s going to help drive traffic back to those websites?
For anyone working in marketing or SEO, this is a real head-scratcher. It’s not just about ranking well anymore – you’ve got to figure out how to create content so compelling that people will want to dive deeper instead of just skimming the AI summary and bouncing.
The search game is changing!
